It is important to start with half drilled pearls (those perfect fully formed spheres) as other pearls such as three-quarter-cut pearls that previously had a tail or irregularity that was cut off can discolor over time. Three-quarter-cut pearls are less valuable that perfectly round pearls. Some venders sell three-quarter-cut pearls and apply a large rounded cup post shown in the image above to hide the cut in the pearl and complete the round shape of the pearl by adjoining the cup post to the pearl earring. The problem with this technique is, although one cannot tell the pearls are not round, they are sure to discolor over time as dirt and other substances can penetrate the area in between the open cut of the pearl and the cup post and eventually cause the pearl to change in color over time.
